draw.io Desktop overview

draw.io Desktop is a diagramming and whiteboarding desktop app based on Electron that wraps the core draw.io editor that is usable via your web browser.

drawio is an open-source technology stack for building diagramming applications, and the world’s most widely used browser-based end-user diagramming software.

draw.io Desktop is designed to be completely isolated from the Internet, apart from the update process. No diagram data is ever sent externally, nor do we send any analytics about app usage externally. This means certain functionality for which we do not have a JavaScript implementation do not work in the Desktop build, namely .vsd and Gliffy import.

What’s new in version 29.5.2

  • Improved freehand drawing: smoother zooming and panning.
  • Animated GIF export added, with flow direction and correct backgrounds.
  • Math rendering updated (MathJax 4.1.1).
  • Scratchpad saving error fixed.
  • Link icons improved and limited to the main diagram.
  • Emoji and supplementary Unicode characters no longer corrupt on save/reload.
  • Bezier curves now fall back gracefully when shapes can’t be handled.
  • StorageFiles rename and Save As issues fixed.
  • EMF import and conversion improved.
  • GitLab 404 handling improved for group iteration.
  • Connection points dialog and image‑crop dialog are now resizable.
  • Fit‑diagram‑on‑load option added.
  • Grid jump during zoom fixed.
  • Arc shape now supports markers; fill/gradient options removed.
  • Error dialogs handle overflow better.
  • Export‑to‑URL option removed in Confluence Cloud.
  • AI button shown in Confluence/Jira when enabled; Claude 4.5 Opus added for local LLMs.
  • Generate window now scrolls properly.
  • Create‑hash diagrams fit to window; XML type added.
  • Translations reviewed and updated.
